AN UPDATE ON AYURVEDIC HERB VISHNUKANTA (CLITORIA TERNATEA LINN.): A REVIEW

Clitoria ternatea commonly known as Butterfly pea is a medicinal plant belonging to the family Fabaceae. The plant is reported to be used in lithiasis, insect bites, skin diseases, asthma, burning sensation, ascites, inflammation, leucoderma, leprosy, hemicrania, amentia and pulmonary tuberculosis. It is commonly called “Shankpushpi” in the Sanskrit language where it is reported to be a good “Medhya” (brain tonic). The major phytoconstituents found in Clitoria ternatea are the pentacyclic triterpenoids such as taraxerol and taraxerone, ternatins, alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, carbohydrates, proteins, resins and starch. The Initial exploratory attempt was made to study the prevalent medicinal flora of Jhansi district of Uttar Pradesh which is a potentially rich heritage of floristic element of medicinal and therapeutical values. The present study deals with angiospermic plants belonging to55 genera and 38 families of Jhansi district for curing various disorders among different ethnic societies. In -vitro cytotoxicity testing has become an integral aspect of drug discovery because it is a convenient, cost effective, and predictive means of characterizing the toxic potential of new chemical entities. The early and routine implementation of this testing is testament to its prognostic importance for humans. Anticancer activity of different concentrations (20-100) of plant extract Terminallia arjuna was shown against Hep3-B.
